Enthusiastic activists joined hosts Greg and Melanie Bartlett, Sarah Jakle, and Tamara Levenson on Saturday, February 2, to learn about Swing Left’s 2020 election strategy.

After Sarah’s inspiring opening remarks, Greg and Tamara explained Swing Left’s 2020 focus on “Super States.”

The most important battles in the race for the White House, the Senate, and fight to control redistricting are concentrated in the same eleven Super States (AZ, CO, TX, WI, MI, OH, GA, FL, NC, PA, and ME). Thus, Swing Left’s 2020 strategy is focused on these eleven states.

The first stage in the Super State strategy is engaging new voters. Turnout is less of an obstacle in presidential elections than in midterm years, so instead of focusing just on turning out existing voters, now Swing Left wants to expand the electorate. To do this, Swing Left is asking its volunteers to write personal letters to the unregistered, asking them to become registered voters. Not only has research shown this strategy to be effective, but it also allows activists in all fifty states to be involved in efforts in the eleven Super States. Attendees had the chance to write letters during the gathering and were also encouraged host to their own letter writing house parties.

The other part of the initial strategy is early fundraising for the future Democratic Presidential and Senate nominees. This ensures nominees have the funds to immediately hire staff and buy ads as soon as they begin their general election campaigns.

A lively question and answer session followed the strategy rundown. Attendees particularly wanted to emphasize the importance of reaching out to other local progressive groups as well as developing effective and concise language to convey the Democratic platform.

Those who are interested in getting started right away can attend a letter writing party on Tuesday, February 19th from 6:30-9:00pm in West LA. RSVP here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/swing-left-westside-codeblue-wla-letter-writing-party.
